You never know about baby sleep

May 13th, 2008 | 3 Comments

I obviously wasn’t clear in my last post, but what I’d meant was that it was about time to pack up for the trip home, and the baby had just fallen asleep. I try very much not to let her be unhappy for our 30+ minute commute, because there’s really nothing I can do for the fussy baby in the car but let her be unhappy.

Today, she just refused to sleep. C had a brief nap this morning, but simply would not sleep this afternoon. She finally fell asleep around four o’clock - an hour before quitting time - in the backpack on my mother’s back.

Personally, I didn’t think we’d be able to get her from the backpack to her bed without waking her, and I wasn’t even sure if it’d be a good thing if we did, because I’d be risking her unhappiness on the trip home. But she did stay asleep, surprisingly enough. She was out. Then when it came time to go home, I knew the transfer wouldn’t work. I got everything packed in my car, and I braced myself for the worst … but it didn’t come.

She slept from the backpack to her bed, from the bed to the car - down a flight of stairs and past the beeping alarm - and from the car to the house. Nice.

I guess you never know.
