Downside to the long commute

September 29th, 2008 | No Comments

Even though I have a new car that seems to get an average of about 35 mpg, I still drive 50 miles a day. The gain of 10 mpg from getting a new car only gave me one extra day between trips to the gas station.

Bring on the grease!

September 29th, 2008 | No Comments

On most work days, I eat a baked potato for lunch. Often I have some green beans to go with it. It’s a pretty dern healthy meal, as these things go, and it’s lacking enough in calories that I’m usually quite hungry by quitting time.

But the baked potato doesn’t always satisfy. I guess you’d call it a fairly bland meal. At the moment, I am absolutely craving something unhealthy. It’s a good thing the Zaxby’s hasn’t reopened yet, but right now I’d settle for a Big Mac.

Ugh. Who chose the time for this debate?

September 26th, 2008 | No Comments

I can’t keep my eyes open much longer. I was really looking forward to watching this debate, but after a long week … I just can’t do it. I don’t want to be awake any longer.

I wish I could know the weather

September 26th, 2008 | No Comments

Not that it’d really do me that much good, I guess.

This weekend is going to be perfect for outdoor work … assuming it doesn’t rain. I could finish painting the front fence. I could get out the chainsaw and cut out the ornamental junk from our front yard (soon to be replaced by a Japanese Maple, I think). I could cut the junk out of the back yard and *gasp* even mow the back yard.

Or it could rain, and I could stay inside and get started on C’s future room.

Hm.

Random parenting question #357

September 26th, 2008 | 10 Comments

How old is a baby girl too old to go to a public bathroom with her dad?

I obviously don’t think the Bug has reached this point yet, although she is certainly walking and talking quite a lot.

If you were a guy and were in the bathroom when a jabbering 14 month old girl came in, would it bother you? What if she were two? Three?

And at what point would you think it’s not a great idea for her, either?

Running away from open tabs

September 25th, 2008 | No Comments

I have so many tabs open in my browser that I actually downloaded a new browser today to avoid looking at the open tabs in my other browser.

This is not the first time I’ve done this. Or the second.

McCain is starting to scare me

September 24th, 2008 | 5 Comments

McCain is now holding the Friday presidential debate hostage. Pass the bailout or no debate.

McCain also said he would not attend Friday night’s debate with Democratic rival Barack Obama unless an economic bailout deal is reached by then.

This is wrong on many, many levels.

Isn’t this the best time for a debate? Shouldn’t they be discussing such a monumental economic crisis? Is McCain afraid of discussing it with Obama without note cards? Why is he so eager to pass the legislation, even if it’s bad for the country?

I could go on and on. What really scares me is that this is more evidence of McCain’s weakness as a leader, and I’m afraid a lot of the country will see it as a strength.

Parenting confession

September 24th, 2008 | 2 Comments

I have a confession to make.

Sometimes, I let C walk around with a pen in her mouth just because it makes her happy and keeps her from getting upset.

Yes, I know how bad it would be if sue happened to trip and fall.

No, sir, I don’t like it

September 24th, 2008 | 1 Comment

The more I think about this impending big business bailout, the more find to dislike.

The way I see it, a very few people in our country found a way to make a lot of money off of worthless securities - eg those mortgages that were doomed to fail. Then when they did fail - surprise, surprise - they expect us to bail them out. And this after Lehman’s executives, at least, give themselves massive bonuses - $1.5 billion in bonuses for a company that is bankrupt.

Bankrupt is right; morally bankrupt.

And not only are we supposed to bail them out, and not only do I not get a say in this, our representatives are being railroaded into making this decision NOW! or the whole world will collapse in a pit of fire!!!

I can’t help but think we’ll all regret this and very soon. It seems like a Michael Moore movie in the making.
