I have a new music addiction

July 15th, 2008, at 3:39 PM

I’ve been a bit absorbed lately with finding, downloading, and listening to new music. For every album I (legally) download, there are ten that are on the wish list.

Here’s what I can’t ever figure out: when you buy your first album from an artist, do you try to find the “essential” album that defines them, or do you get the newest album that says where they are now and what they sound like now?

I tend to go back and forth on this and I’ve never found a great answer.

Have you listened to the band “Lydia?”

I have a hard time with that too, particularly now that I’m on the legal side of downloading. Most of the bands that I get now are putting out their first or second record, so its not hard to catch up, but its a dilemma. Go with the first record, to see where they started? Get the one that has the best review? From where? Pitchfork? Rolling Stones? Metacritic?
Ug. I dunno. Its enough to make you fire up the utorrent…

I got out of nonlegal downloading right when torrents got popular. I actually have no clue how to use them (I mean how to find them).

And emusic is a really good deal - 75 songs for 20 bucks. If you sign up for an annual plan, that’s less than 20 cents a song.
