Teh sickness

May 24th, 2008 | 1 Comment

First the cousins got strep. Then E got strep. Then Katie, C, and I woke up this morning all feeling terrible but in different ways.

C is definitely running a fever, but the doc doesn’t think it’s strep (it’s hard for babies to get strep, for one thing, and she failed - or passed? - the quick strep test). Katie has classic strep symptoms and will go to the doctor after taking care of baby.

Personally, I’m sitting on my front porch, listening to music, and feeling mostly lousy.

Yay for Saturday! Looks like we’re having a forced weekend off. At least it’s a three day weekend.

Does anyone mow anymore?

May 23rd, 2008 | 11 Comments

Not that I’m complaining. Really, I don’t care so much. I just find it a tad odd.

I’ve noticed lately that my next-door neighbor doesn’t tend to mow very often (read: the backyard has yet to see a mower this year). But as I went for a walk yesterday, I realized I was in the minority as far as lawn mowing was concerned. Of the five houses in a row - with mine in the middle - I was the only one who had mowed in the last month.

And I keep thinking I need to do better about mowing, but really there’s little point, is there?

Obviously, she woke up

May 23rd, 2008 | No Comments

Obviously, from looking at my last post, the Bug awoke within seconds of hitting publish.

Sometimes, it’s hard to get her to stay asleep. Yesterday was an awesome day, and I had fun hanging out with her (hanging out with E wasn’t as “fun,” because he was too sick to do anything other than watch tv), but I never got the two to three hour stretch of nap time I was expecting.

First she was wakened by H cleaning the hall bookshelves; then it was H talking on the phone. Obviously, neither time was his fault. Then she fell asleep in the stroller but awoke on returning to the house.

But we did eventually get some good time together outside. I put some music on and gave her a few toys. I must’ve sat on the porch for an hour, just watching her be happy. She played with one toy, then the next, then wanted to play the stand and sit game, and then it was back to her toys.

It’s a rough life.

I could get used to this

If the Bug will just stay asleep for a little longer.

It’s simply beautiful outside. I’m sitting on my front porch, reading my book, listening to some music, and enjoying the breeze.

I can’t believe the Bug is still asleep!

Usually, she sleeps in her bed until around two in the morning, and after that is a mixed bag - she might wake every fifteen minutes and fuss, or she might sleep pretty well.

Last night was the exception. She slept until four, and went back to sleep pretty easily. She’s almost always awake by 6:30 or 7, but now it’s almost 8 and I’m going to have to wake her up to get ready for E’s doctor appointment.

It’d be nice if she slept this well on the weekend!

edit: forgot to click publish at 8.

Sick day

May 22nd, 2008 | No Comments

Although he seems fine at the moment, E is home sick today. We thought he had strep, because it seems like everyone has strep, but after three days of being home sick, he seems to be getting better instead of worse. But we’re going to go to the doctor this morning anyway. So I get to hang out with the two youngins today, although I might consider going in to work if E continues to feel better (in the past few days he’s felt better at times and far worse at other times, so it’s hard to predict based on the moment).

I suppose this means I’ll be watching a lot of Disney channel today.

But it’s going to be a three day weekend, and on Memorial day I’ll have the remote to myself!

Video of the day

Ohmygoodness!

For some reason I couldn’t get this video to work my first few tries this week, but I never closed the window. Thank goodness for that.

My patience was worth it.

(The scout uniform is a nice touch, too, Doug.)

I hate Windows

May 21st, 2008 | No Comments

Yes, I’m talking the OS, not the kind made of glass that helps brighten up the room.

Yesterday, I finally got around to running Windows update on my computer. It turns out, yesterday’s update was a biggie - service pack 3, as a matter of fact. And thanks to that lovely update, M$ turned automatic updates back on for my computer.

I hate this. Frankly, it makes me extremely angry that they feel the need to do this without my permission.

Why do I care so much? I’ll tell you. Yesterday, I started working on a new client from Poland, and there’s a lot of stuff I’ve yet to learn about taxation of aliens. Currently, I’ve got a few dozen firefox tabs open and numerous pdf files. I’m running several tax programs and Excel.

But because Windows turned automatic updates back on (and I’ve obviously turned it back off now), my computer downloaded new updates a few minutes ago. Big whoop, right? Wrong. Now that the computer is newly updated, it wants to restart to make the process official. And that means that every five minutes I have to tell the computer that I don’t want it to restart. Grumble. And if I don’t happen to see the notification, it’ll just restart on me. And all of my work and research will be lost.

Grumble.

Because of M$’s penchant for junk like this, I rarely do updates on this computer. I can’t always just restart the computer at the drop of a hat because M$ wants me to. Why can’t it just install the updates the next time I turn the computer off?

Why does Windows have to be such a lousy OS? When will my tax software be usable in an OS that cares about its users?
