Does anyone mow anymore?

May 23rd, 2008, at 10:47 AM

Not that I’m complaining. Really, I don’t care so much. I just find it a tad odd.

I’ve noticed lately that my next-door neighbor doesn’t tend to mow very often (read: the backyard has yet to see a mower this year). But as I went for a walk yesterday, I realized I was in the minority as far as lawn mowing was concerned. Of the five houses in a row - with mine in the middle - I was the only one who had mowed in the last month.

And I keep thinking I need to do better about mowing, but really there’s little point, is there?

Gas is expensive. Lawn mowers break easily. It has rained every single weekend this spring/summer.

    Yeah, I guess.

I mean, I know I have a million excuses, which is why I’ve been trying to do better. And I know that if my mower were to break, I would probably do some serious procrastination.

But still. One lawn out of five? And it’s not like we have a lot of spare time at my house, either.

In the summer here in Houston…we move every week! We HAVE to or else the lawns would look like trash!
I think its great you still mow your lawn. I thought you were leaning to having a lawn service come out with your title! Here LOTS of people pay others to do their lawns. We still do ours….b/c we can’t afford the extra to pay someone else! Plus we have all the tools to do it!

We mow, or I should say R mows. Every 6 days or so.

When we went out of town for two weeks in March, my Mom said “our grass was as high as an elephant’s eye”. She’s so cute. It wasn’t near as high as when we were gone for the full month of June one time.

Are they owners or renters? Cause renters are not gonna.

  6. jon says:

    Mostly owners, actually.

Just people who find mowing to be an incredibly low priority. Which I understand, but still.

I say — buy goats and let the loose in the neighborhood one night. Round them up at dawn. Repeat daily until desired lawn height is achieved. =)

  8. jon says:

And the goat poop would be a bonus!

Seriously, though, I’m not saying I necessarily mind as much as I just think it’s strange.

My neighbor does the goat thing. Someone actually pays him for grazing rights, so he gets free mowing plus cash.

Me, I just pay somebody to mow the yard. Where I live I don’t have to keep the yard immaculately groomed, so I can have it mowed every other week for not too much money.

  10. jon says:

Wow, they pay to let their goat graze?

I wish I could have the (city’s) kudzu patch grazed. I didn’t know people would pay for the privilege.

goat poop makes great compost — if you are into that kind of thing. Hey,… any goat hearders out there — you can let your goat graze my city property for 20 dollars and if you pay for the citation from the city for not being zoned Ag 1. =) OR you can put dog ears and tails on the goats and make up a convincing story why the bark funny…
