Need new clothing

May 8th, 2008, at 9:57 AM

Every now and then, my boss (& dad) gives me a clothing allowance to help me build up my professional wardrobe.

It couldn’t've come at a better time this week. I’ve finally got some nice new shoes, and I need a whole lot more shirts. For years, I’ve been wearing short-sleeved button up shirts during the summer at the office.

You see, we often don’t use a lot of air conditioning when the weather is nice. I keep a thermometer on my desk, and this morning it was reading 78 degrees when we got up to turn on the a/c. Downstairs is a whole ‘nother matter; they don’t turn on the a/c just because it’s eighty degrees. Oh no.

So I’ve tended to wear a lot of short-sleeved shirts, but it’s time to transition to nicer, cotton, professional looking long-sleeve shirts, even if they’re not as cool in the warm weather. I’ve just got to figure out where to get what and get on it. Like I said, this couldn’t've come at a better time.

OK - glad you’re moving away from the Morman look - also, can you find out if I qualify for a “clothing” allowance? thanks

    Mormon look?

Mormon look: short sleeved dress shirts ;-)

  4. jon says:

Oh. Well these aren’t dress shirts, I don’t guess. I’m not sure what the look is.

  5. Joe says:

Do you have to wear a tie?

  6. jon says:

    Nope.

I don’t think a tie is really necessary anymore unless you’re a lawyer. Or getting married.

Brooks Brother’s sells beautiful shirts that are worth the investment. They hold up very well over the years. Things must be different in your area because up here professional men wear suits and ties except on Friday’s.

A lot of professional men do down here, too, although that’s changing. And I don’t think the clients care what we wear as long as we look nice and do good work.

Ties are pretty much the most ridiculous invention ever.

I beg to differ on that point: Underwire bras, pointy toe high heels, corsets………we have you beat on that point.

Hey, I didn’t say it was the most uncomfortable invention. I just don’t think you can get any more ridiculous than a random, narrow piece of cloth (often ridiculously decorated) hanging from your neck.

Husband travels a lot AND runs really warm — as in, he’s in shorts when I’m in 3 layers plus a coat. He swears by the coolmax shirts from travelsmith. they sure hold up well, require no ironing, and are generally a 2 thumbs up. http://www.travelsmith.com/jump.jsp?itemID=1563&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C251%2C257%2C312&iProductID=1563&sortBy=0
