Tonight’s going to be the night

I’ve been on a new set of drugs for a few weeks now, and I’m feeling ten times better than I’ve felt in the last year.

Tonight might be the night to test it: I’m going to eat ice cream. Cross your fingers.

Just because I love cold weather

January 21, 2008 · Posted in life · Comment

Just because I love cold weather doesn’t mean I love being cold. I’m having issues warming up enough to work this morning.

Next weekend, I will have the house all to myself, and I will setup my work in front of a nice fire.

But that’s a few days away, and I need to warm up now!

I’m still alive!

I’ve been unbelievably busy in the last week, and the only time I’ve had at the computer has been spent working. On Saturday, I helped my brother’s family move into their new home. After four hours of that, I came home and spent the rest of the day clearing out brush from my back yard to make room for a fence. Yesterday, the kids and I spent at least an hour making the biggest brush pile I think I’ve ever seen. I’m feeling muscles that have gone unnoticed for years.

And it’s about 60 degrees in this office right now, so in addition to soreness, my fingers are almost too cold to type.

I’ve got to find a way to warm up and get started working!

I must be a dad

I just noticed I’ve had a pacifier in my pocket all day today, even though the baby is with her grandmother.

Choices, choices

January 16, 2008 · Posted in life · Comment

We’ve started getting bids on the various projects we’ll accomplish with our refinance, and we’re making a list of things that need to get done (in an old house, “need” is not an overstatement). We know getting a new fence is at the very top of the list, because we have a creek in our back yard and will soon enough have a toddler who could wander into it. The fence will take away about a third of our renovation budget.

But while we know the fence is priority number one, we haven’t yet decided on a priority number two. As I said, there are lots of things we need to get done, ranging from rewiring the flood lights in the back (which is less necessary with a fence surrounding the yard, I guess) to redoing the upstairs bathroom so that there’s an actual shower. And then there’s my personal pet project: new gutters.

I just can’t figure out how the different plans fit in. I guess in a lot of ways that’s a good problem to have.

It still blows my mind

Sometimes I will glance over at C, sleeping peacefully beside me, and it blows my mind to realize that we made a person.

Abstractly, being a “parent” doesn’t seem like a huge deal; the greater majority of adults are parents, and everyone has them. But realizing that being a parent means you created a person … it’s mind boggling.

We have a date for a new fence!

And I’m so excited!

She almost flipped over

January 15, 2008 · Posted in life · 1 Comment

Last week, my mother reported that C “might have flipped over.” When she left the room, C was on her back, and when she returned she was on her tummy. But that time no one saw it happen, and I think she used part of her “gymanee” - or whatever it’s called - as leverage. Really, I think she caught her foot on it and accidentally flipped over. She certainly hasn’t flipped since then.

But this morning, she almost did it. She was there except for one arm, still tucked under her belly. And after a minute, she pushed up on that arm and back to her back she went.

Since she hates her tummy time, I had argued that C was uninterested in flipping over. I can’t say that any longer. I know she won’t be happy on her tummy when she gets there, but she definitely wants more mobility.

I just hope I’m there when she flips. It’s so very cool to see her learn such a huge thing and make such a drastic change.

I like Harper’s

I like Harper’s.

I’ve been reading it off and on for a few years - off because it requires a certain level of attention span that I don’ t always have, and on because it’s just good: the writing is good, the subjects are good, the excerpts are good.

But it’s more than all of that: I like how Harper’s is unabashedly liberal. It doesn’t announce it like it’s trying to impress you. It just is, and it makes no excuses.
