I miss hand lotion
Is that the weirdest subject or what?
A few years ago I developed some kind of weird allergy to who-knows-what in most lotions and liquid soaps. It sounds mildly annoying, but really it’s far worse than that. This particular allergy not only makes it difficult for me to wash my hands in public places, it also makes it close to impossible for me not to have painfully dry hands for close to a third of the year.
It’s one of life’s weird ironies that my hands hurt so bad during my favorite months of the year. Also, I am quite attached to my fireplace; nothing dries the air like a good wood fire.
But all winter, the only balm I can use for my dry skin is neosporin, which is neither cheap nor practical. And some days I dream of being able to use hand lotion. That’s it. I just want to moisturize my hands like every other person in America.
Like I said, weird subject, right?

Unless you really need an antibiotic, you should consider trying some combination of the non-active ingredients in neosporin: cocoa butter, cottonseed oil, olive oil, sodium pyruvate, vitamin E, and white petrolatum.
I agree with Suzanne- Neosporin is not for long term use and can cause dermatitis from the continued exposure to the antibiotics. My son has the same sensitive skin. He uses unscented Vaseline or A&D ointment. For washing his hands Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and avoids rough paper towels. He said patting your hands dry with Viva and immediately applying A&D or Vaseline should help. Nope it is not a weird subject .
Have you tried the balm from Thistle Farms? The ingredients are olive oil, almond oil, beeswax, essential/fragrance oils. I use it on my hands a lot during the winter (disclaimer — I sell it in my store!).
You guys have giving me something to think about. I’d not thought about the antibiotic nature of neosporin. I only cared that it works.
I have tried just about everything I could get my hands on (pun intended). I’ve had some luck with products like cocoa butter, but it’s greasy and hard to apply.
But maybe that’s still better than continuing to use antibiotics. Like I said, something to think about.
Oh, and Christy - I haven’t tried that balm, but I generally shy away from anything with fragrance. I’d love to try some if I didn’t have to buy it! For the first few years I had this problem, I stocked all of my friends with lotion, because I’d try everything and then give it away.
Have you ever tried Vanicream? http://www.psico.com/
Several months ago when Wing was having such trouble with eczema and allergies, we tried this and it worked like a charm.
Just wanted to say you might have a glycerin allergy. My father suffers from the same ailment. Try finding something without glycerin, like plain old vaseline. To get rid of the rough, dry parts mix with sugar to exfoliate. Rub in & wash- dry hands be gone without allergy!
I had something similiar - found out it was an allergy to parabens which is used in a lot of things. Found a good site to compare the ingredients in different washes its called http://www.exederm.com/ good way to spot and avoid irritants
First, my inner middle schooler laughed at your title. Then my inner college kid thought how fortunate you are to not need hand lotion.
But the adult in me has to say try Udder Cream. Yes, the instructions talk about using it on cows teats. Okay. That made the inner middle schooler giggle. Udder Cream is unlike any other lotion I have tried (and I’ve tried a bunch!) It’s not greasy and unlike the ones that seem to absorb into the skin and disappear, this one really keeps the skin feeling great. Walgreens used to sell it but recently discontinued it. I have been told Target sells it but I keep forgetting to look. Amazon has it and if you want to split the shipping costs I’ll probably join you on an order.

i have been to 2 dermatoligists looking for a cure for my entire body itch. finally vanicream soap a nd lotion gave me relief. also i found that tea tree oil works very well. don’t care too much for the smell. expensive. use no fragrance of any kind. no deodorant with fragrance, hypo-allergenic detergent, etg. try vanicream soap, pat yourself dry.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
