So tired

October 17, 2007 · Posted in life · Comment

I took over baby duties at 4:30 this morning (except Katie fed her again when she got back up). Now C is wiggling beside me in her seat. She’s hardly slept since 4:30 and has already gone through a bottle. I, on the other hand, am quite tired. I’m envious of her energy.

C says:

“I like having a bed at work.”

I got to eat!

Today was the very first day when I was able to put C down for a nap and actually eat my lunch. (I’ve been relying on others to watch her while I ate.) How wonderful.

Tenuous

Today was the first day C didn’t sleep through the trip up to the office. I’m certainly not complaining; she didn’t fuss or cry even once. But when we did get here, she was ready to eat, and it was a challenge getting everything in and a bottle ready. From one day to the next, I never know how our day will go. I guess that’s true to life.

Now she’s sleeping in the swing, which wasn’t working last week but is somewhat inexplicably working now. But every few minutes she opens an eye and looks around or puts up a bit of a fuss before falling back asleep.

Today is a big day at the office, because it’s the day tax returns are due if you got an extension in April. Today is the lesser known tax day for those who choose to prolong tax season all year. And no, I’m not complaining; it gives me something fun to do throughout most of the year, not to mention a paycheck.

Thank goodness I’m mostly ready for the day, because I can tell C isn’t going to be sleeping wonderfully. Maybe that’s a good sign for tonight.

Morning phone call

October 14, 2007 · Posted in life · 5 Comments

At about 4 o’clock this morning, I heard Katie say “that can’t be good” as she lifted up C, who had been nursing beside her. I felt a moment of panic before realizing she was talking about the phone ringing in the other room. Nothing was wrong with C, so it must be one of the other kids. But they were all at home in bed; it had to be something else.

Something else indeed. The phone call was from Job, Katie’s sister. Poor Betsy is having the *worst* time this year. It started with terrible morning sickness that lasted for months and left her mostly incapacitated. And then there was the gestational diabetes, followed by preeclampsia. Then she was confined to her bed because of extremely high blood pressure and barely made it on her feet before her five-year-old son broke his leg, rendering him completely dependent on his mom. Combine that with a fussy baby who never sleeps more than 45 minutes in a stretch.

And now she’s going to have to have gall bladder surgery, apparently, and she’s on morphine right now from the pain. No one knows how the baby is going to eat when B is in the hospital.

It sounds to me like going through hell.

I love it when

I love it when I get to work and find pacifiers in my pocket.

End of week two

October 11, 2007 · Posted in life · 3 Comments

Well, we’re drawing close to the end of week two with Katie back and work and C being shuffled between my office and my mom’s house. We’ve had a few hiccups, but I think we’re going to be ok.

C is simply a wonderful little creature, and I am overwhelmed by how much I love her. I don’t always get as much work done while she’s at the office, and it can be frustrating finding time to eat lunch, but all the cons are made up for by her quiet snores, cute baby smiles, and general wonderfulness. And my mother seems to be thrilled to death to be able to hang out with her two full days a week, although we’re still working on her carseat and sling.

I know it’s hard on Katie to have to be away from her baby for so much each week (about 50 hours), but I think C is making up for that by staying up all night (and is she grateful?). And I can tell it’s gonna be good.

Now I’m motivated

I was just lying here on the couch wondering how I was going to motivate myself to get up and clean the kitchen when E came in and turned on Nick.

Now I’m motivated.

Two blog questions

  1. Katie’s blog is loading incredibly slowly for me, is anybody else seeing that?
  2. Does anybody know how to do pictures in WordPress? Mine always look like Katie’s, which isn’t ideal.
