I kinda like the name Charlotte….
So I guess everyone has already heard our news. Yep, we’re having a girl!
I’m still very much in shock. We weren’t supposed to find out until Monday morning, and I was trying not to get too excited yet; that’s still a few days away. Even when we heard this morning that they were about to do an ultrasound, I didn’t expect much. And then the lady said, in a rather matter-of-fact manner, “well, you’re having a girl.” Katie was so excited she had the phone to her ear before she left the room (not true, but close) and making plans for whom else to call, all the while telling me how excited they’d be.
It’s something else, knowing she’s a girl. For one thing, no more awkward she/he’ness. And now we can focus on girl names, which is good considering how few boy names I like.
Personally, I’m vying for Charlotte. Clara was my favorite until this morning, when Katie said “a lot of people pronounce Clara with an “ah” sound, as in Clahra.
Charlotte Anderson Hickman. I like it. And I’ve only got another five months to convince Kate.

Youngest niece is named Charlotte Emery.
We call her Charley.
I wasn’t sold on the name until she embodied it.
CONGRATULATIONS.
Cigar will be presented to you if I ever get to meet you guys.

Thanks!
And I hope you’re still coming up this summer!

the charster
March 29th, 2007 at 1:35 pm
Doesn’t have the same ring as the Harpster, does it?
March 29th, 2007 at 1:36 pm
I like Charlotte very well. A top contender.
I also really, really like Georgia and Anabel
March 29th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
Yeah, but you can’t say “the Georgster” or the “Annaster.”

Thanks!
And congrats to you, too!

Hi Jon,
Congratulations! I think most men find raising a daughter enchanting.
I agree that Charlotte is a fabulous cool strong name.
You’re lucky that your last name makes any first name sound good.

Thanks, Dewi!
And I’m very much looking forward to raising a daughter.
(Once I can convince Kate to let me name her!)
March 29th, 2007 at 2:17 pm
I also like Kate’s choice of Georgia.
My midwifes name is Georgia and her husbands last name is Rose.
She is known as Georgia Rose and is the most wonderful person in the world.
So many good names to choose. You will need more babies ;->

Indeed!
March 29th, 2007 at 2:25 pm
Interesting- about our last name making any first name sound good. I’ve always thought the opposite. I think the first name needs to be 2 syllables.
March 29th, 2007 at 2:34 pm
Like Joe Hickman, perhaps?
March 29th, 2007 at 2:36 pm
Anabel Hickman
Georgia Hickman
Those are great names.
But so are Beatrice Hickman, Louisa Hickman, Frances Hickman and Josephine Hickman, but Jon has vetoed them ::-(
I like Charlotte, although I am hearing it an awful lot on little hipster babies lately
March 29th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
As I said on Katie’s blog, “Yay!’ But I am still a little disappointed Catherine wasn’t a contender longer… haha…kidding. I bet Jane is gonna be THRILLED.
March 29th, 2007 at 2:58 pm
Yeah, she is. And E is gonna be bummed. No Pablo.
March 29th, 2007 at 2:58 pm
Joe, what were the other names you considered for Harper? We love Harper’s name. Damn you for taking it!!!
March 29th, 2007 at 2:58 pm
And Catherine, your name (and mine) really should stay in the running. I really love it.
March 29th, 2007 at 3:08 pm
Congrats! I’m so excited for you all!!!
While I do like Charlotte Anderson Hickman …
Georgia Anderson Hickman sounds nice too!
You could do the southern-double name and call her “Georgia An”)
March 29th, 2007 at 3:12 pm
Yeah, but then her initials would be gah!
March 29th, 2007 at 3:14 pm
I’ll even let you keep your spelling!
March 29th, 2007 at 3:16 pm
My spelling is actually the same as yours! My parents named me Catherine with a C but called me Katie with a K. They’re wacky that way.
March 29th, 2007 at 4:07 pm
She was going to be either Henry or Joe. I still think we should have named her Joe. Why not use Anderson as the first name and call her Andi Jo - I know, I know Jonathan hates stuff like that.
March 29th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
Congratulations!!
Charlotte is a great name. I like the old-timey sounding names. If Leo had been a girl, we would’ve gone with Ruby.

Well, obviously I love the name Henry
What other girl names did you consider?
March 30th, 2007 at 12:35 am
Congratulations, you two! Boy, I would have lost that bet. I was just absolutely positive you were having another boy.
March 30th, 2007 at 3:48 am
Yeah, you do have to look out for the initials thing. However, most feminine monograms use the last initial as the central one so it’d be “gHa”.
Granted, wth my maiden name my initials were gSa. Momma couldn’t handle that my initials would have spelled out gas so she threw in Maria (I honestly think Julie Andrews had something to do with it although Momma would never admit it) so my name is Georgia Alice Maria “Smith”
After working in a jewelry store with engraving and doing clothing monograms you’re going to be fine anyway you go- an H is a beautifully balanced letter and aesthetically, anything you choose will work well with it.

I’m sorry I can’t help. We really didn’t have any other girl names. We really were set on Henry - a week after the ultrasound Wendy called me at work - I said Hello - she said Harper - I said huh. Anyway, we both think that the first name should be Anderson.
March 30th, 2007 at 9:24 am
I love Anderson for a girl (or boy). Jon won’t consider it.
March 30th, 2007 at 9:26 am
I just don’t think a girl’s name should end in “son.”
And Kate - what do you think of Andi as a nickname?
March 30th, 2007 at 9:27 am
I kind of like it, but I would mostly call her Anderson.
March 30th, 2007 at 9:28 am
I like Mary Anderson. And call her both: Mary Anderson
March 30th, 2007 at 9:30 am
Uh, no.
March 30th, 2007 at 11:54 am
I don’t understand Jon’s rules. I guess we’ll call her baby hiccup.
March 30th, 2007 at 2:08 pm
I don’t have “rules” per se. I just don’t like double names, esp names like Mary Anderson, where it sounds like that’s her first and last names. I also prefer making it easy on her and not naming her one thing and calling her another. The whole “let’s name her Mary and call her Polly” thing makes me think “let’s name him Stephen and call him Carl.” Why not just name her what you’ll call her?
And Anderson sounds like a boy name. Anderson Cooper, for instance. There’s a ’son’ on it, after all. Also, as someone pointed out, Anderson Hickman sounds like a law firm.
I also don’t want her to have an incredibly common name. I got so tired of being Jon H.
