Back to baby names

February 22nd, 2007, at 2:08 PM

I am extremely picky about baby names. I only get one chance to name this baby, and I want to get it right.

I’ve got a small list of girl names I’m happy with - Clara, Charlotte, Georgia, and Annabelle come to mind. But I’m not quite there for boys. Currently, I like two names - Noah and Samuel - and both of them are too popular for my tastes.

Actually, it has nothing to do with taste. Growing up, I was one of a million Johns. The fact that I didn’t spell my name with an H seemed to make no impression on other people’s pronunciations. I hated being one of three Johns in any given class. I had a Jonathan roommate in college, and several close friends were also John. It’s not the end of the world having a popular name. But I don’t want to do that to my kid if I can help it. (I found it especially annoying that my name was both very popular and always misspelled, too.)

I’m stuck. I can’t come up with any guy names I’m happy with that aren’t in the top twenty (using the baby name voyager). Luckily, I’ve got some time and a patient wife. But I need to start making some progress.

I knew someone who didn’t even try until the baby was born. Then, they said they just knew what name belonged with that little person. You could also make potential lists off of the two family trees. Or, Katie could do all the list-making and you could just scratch out the three you like least and star the three you like best.

Katie has been making list after list, but I just can’t get behind “Beatrice” or “George.”

But then I’ve got a few good girl names I like, it’s really the George I have to think about.

Of course I’ve already suggested Mongo but I have a Charlotte Emery and an Asa as my nieces.
No one else has these names and we call Charlotte “Charley.”
I have a very traditional Cheerleader gone to pot name. It’s Tracy.
At 41 years old, that name just sounds too damned frivilous is you ask me.
    Good luck.

Maybe you won’t have to come up with a boy name. We had ONE boy name picked out (well, I picked it and it’s a family name and I kinda didn’t allow any discussion) - but we could NOT agree on a girl name.

So I decided I wouldn’t sweat a girl name until we had our gender scan as we’d still have plenty of time to come up with something - and sure enough, turned out to be a boy.

    Thundaar.

I guarantee he’ll be the only Thundaar in his class.

I think if it’s a boy, we should just go with Jon junior. And if it’s a girl? Jon junior.

    Easy. No more problems.

Now that you mention it, Sony would be a good baby name. Very high tech.

    Wait, that was spam? Nevermind.

  12. jon says:

Shoot, one of them slipped through. That’s the third one today.

Otoh, maybe Sony would be worth something….

    Gareth? Gavin? Nathaniel?

  14. jon says:

Nathaniel is actually growing on me. Good point.
